Wow. -17 last night. Nice! I know most people like it sunny and warm but to an ice angler waiting for a good hard freeze, this is the weather we have been waiting for. We have a little snow around Peterborough but it should not hinder the ice making of a good cold snap.
Some of the larger lakes and areas of current are still not safe or even frozen over yet but some of the small back lakes and protected bays on larger lakes are ready to go. Always put your safety first when accessing the ice. An ice spud, axe or auger will let you quickly check the ice thickness as you work your way out. Check often.
The great thing right now are the amount of choices we have to fish. Panfish are open all year and from the cold water are the best tasting fish around. More north of us are the Haliburton and Bancroft area lakes with lots of trout waters that are open. If the lake is stocked and managed as a put and take fishery by the MNR the lake is usually open year round. I always check the latest stocking reports provided by the MNR for the different regions I fish. It is surprising how often you have these small lakes to yourself and the action can be awesome.
